ISCRR’s Acting Co-Director Janine McMillan recently attended and presented at the 2024 Comcare National Conference in Canberra.

Janine’s talk ‘Prevention of vicarious trauma – what is evidence-based?’ was well received. It was based on ISCRR’s Evidence Reviews into the prevalence and impact of vicarious trauma within the workplace, and the interventions and preventive strategies to address it.

Other speakers included Kirk Docker (pictured above), Co-creator and Director of ‘You Can’t Ask That’. He spoke on communicating and connecting with empathy, how to ask better questions to get more interesting answers, and reading people in the moment.

Kate Jenkins AO, former Sex Discrimination Commissioner, discussed respect and equality in the workplace, collaboration, and leadership approaches to guiding critical workplace cultural change.

Associate Professor Ross Iles and Dr. Dianne Sheppard of SuperFriend explained how organisations can provide psychosocial risk management solutions that meet the requirements of the relevant Codes of Practice, and set up workplaces to thrive. This involves identifying hazards, assessing risks, controlling those risks, and reviewing control measures with consultation at each step.

The conference provided a varied and insightful program. Many thanks to Comcare for the thought and organisation that went into delivering it.
