Researching trauma can take its toll—on everyone involved. Last November, ISCRR Senior Researcher Dr Ivana Randjelovic presented at The Australian Sociological Association 2024 conference in Perth on “Politics of care in research: We have ethics, risk assessment, and distress protocol. And what about researchers?”
Using collaborative autoethnography, this project tracked the emotions of ISCRR researchers at key stages throughout a project that involved interviews with bereaved families. Ivana’s research found that ISCRR researchers were emotionally prepared—but only partially. Anxiety, the need for control, and delayed emotional responses reminded us that researchers need support too.
